You are looking at a brand new iDo participant, Quincy, breaking down the 2011 California Bench. Naming over-arching themes in each panel, Quincy was not alone in his analysis of the bench. In fact, the entire group of iDo participants this year are extremely bright, thoughtful, and engaging – like they are every year. Several students talked about the physical design of each panel, while others discussed thematic context, while others spoke to the technologies used to create the bench. All in all, as with every year, there is a palpable amount of curiosity and creativity.
Marty is fresh back from his trip around the world where he swam with manta rays and explored the jungles of the Amazon. He comes back without skipping a beat and leads a dynamic conversation with the students about what design is. Students answer with objects such as "shoes," "toothpaste," and even "refrigerators." Laura, another iDo participant, turned around and asked Marty, "Is water designed, since people make so much money from it?" This goes to show the inquisitive nature these students bring with them.
